Zeal Card Review (Powered by Gnosis Pay)
Testing note: This review is based on hands-on testing using the Zeal frontend for Gnosis Pay. Gnosis Pay itself does not offer a consumer-facing app, so your experience depends on the frontend you choose.
Overview
The Zeal Card is a self-custodial Visa debit card built on Gnosis Pay, giving users a way to spend crypto directly from a smart wallet. Unlike many crypto cards that rely on custodial balances or centralized exchanges, Gnosis Pay keeps funds in your own Safe smart wallet until you make a purchase.
Cashback is one of the card's biggest selling points, although earning rewards requires holding the native GNO token. Without a GNO balance, the card earns no cashback at all.
During testing, onboarding took around 20 minutes including identity verification. Payments worked as expected, although a few parts of the experience (particularly adding the card to Google Pay and contacting support) felt less polished than some competing crypto cards.
Zeal (Gnosis Pay) Cashback and Tiers
Cashback is entirely determined by the amount of GNO held inside your Gnosis Pay Safe and can reach as high as 4%. Rewards are paid in GNO, not stablecoins or points, meaning the value of your cashback fluctuates with the market price of the token.
Holders of a Gnosis Pay OG NFT receive an additional 1%, enabling a maximum cashback rate of 5%.
| GNO Held | Approx. Value (USD) | Cashback | Cashback on $1,000/month Spend |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | $0 | 0% | ~$0 |
| 0.1 GNO | ~$10.41 | 1% | ~$10 |
| 1 GNO | ~$104.11 | 2% | ~$20 |
| 10 GNO | ~$1,041.10 | 3% | ~$30 |
| 100 GNO | ~$10,411 | 4% | ~$40 |
| 100 GNO + Gnosis Pay OG NFT | ~$10,411 + OG NFT | 5% | ~$50 |
Approximately USD values are based on the GNO price from 29 June 2026.
Unlike cards that reward spending immediately regardless of holdings, the Zeal Card requires users to commit capital to GNO before earning meaningful rewards. Whether that trade-off is worthwhile depends on how comfortable you are holding the token.
Cashback is credited directly to your connected Safe smart wallet on Gnosis Chain.
Zeal (Gnosis Pay) Fees
Card issuance
- Virtual card: Free
- Physical Visa card: €30
Foreign exchange
Gnosis Pay boasts 0% FX fees for EUR and GBP specifically if holding EURe or GBPe. For other currencies, our testing suggests a small spread is built into the conversion.
For example:
- In-app rate: 1 EURe = 4.27 PLN
- Market rate at the time: 1 EURe = 4.29 PLN
The difference is small enough that many users may never notice it, but it indicates the FX cost is embedded in the exchange rate rather than shown as a separate fee.
ATM withdrawals
Physical card holders receive:
- 5 free ATM withdrawals per month, or
- €200 total monthly withdrawals, whichever limit is reached first.
After exceeding the allowance, withdrawals incur an approximately 2% fee.
Zeal (Gnosis Pay) Other Features
Funding the card
There are two ways to fund Zeal cards:
- Bank transfer via IBAN (powered by Monerium)
- Crypto transfers from exchanges or private wallets
A wide range of crypto assets and deposit networks are supported.
Identity verification
Identity verification is mandatory before the card can be used.
During onboarding we were asked to provide:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Residential address
- Government-issued identification
- Facial video verification
Verification is handled by Sumsub.
Onboarding experience
Our complete onboarding process took roughly 20 minutes.
While the verification flow itself was straightforward, the overall experience had a few rough edges:
- Adding the card to Google Pay required manual entry rather than a streamlined one-tap process.
- Customer support did not respond to our test enquiry.
These issues are likely to matter more for users who are new to self-custodial wallets than experienced crypto users.
Card network
The Zeal Card uses the Visa network, giving it broad merchant acceptance wherever Visa debit cards are supported.
Yield and crypto features
Zeal offers yield on deposits through three vaults:
- EURe vault powered by Aave (2.4% APR)
- USDS vault powered by Sky (4.2% APR)
- ZCHF vault powered by Frankencoin (3.5%)
Welcome offer
New users can receive a €5 bonus after spending €50 across three different merchants.
Verdict
The Zeal Card, and Gnosis Pay in general, offers one of the more interesting self-custodial spending experiences. Cashback rates can be attractive for users already holding GNO, but they are effectively unavailable without maintaining a token balance.
